Things To Do in Denia

There's a huge range of places to visit both in and around Denia - whether you're interested in the region's culture, history, nature or you just want a fun day out. A visit to the 16th century castle which dominates the town is a good starting point. You pay a small entrance free but then you're free to roam through the castle at leisure. There are refreshingly few restrictions on the areas you can explore so you can clamber over the ancient walls at will (a little hazardous for small children though so keep them on a tight rein!)

Still within the city boundaries you can visit the toy museum, the municipal food market with its colourful collection of fresh local produce (from olives to octopus!) or head down to the port for the traditional Lonja del Pescado fish auctions.

The fishermen's quarters of Baix la Mar and Les Roaues are charming with their cobbled streets and whitewashed buildings. Or visit the Tower of Gerro, built as a look out post as part of the war on piracy in the 17th century.

Spain's biggest theme park, Terra Mitica is a 40 minute drive south at Benidorm. The park offers an action packed day of big thrill rides, live entertainment and endless amusement all set in a magical, mythical land echoing the ancient cultures which formed the present day Spain (Terra Mitica means Mythical Land).

Also in Benidorm you'll find two more major attractions. The Aqualandia water park with its impressive array of slides, pools and play areas and next door Mundomar where you can enjoy a colourful menagerie of tropical birds and marine life.

Head into the mountains and visit one of Spain's top tourist attractions - the "eagle's nest" Moorish fortress at Guadalest, a marvel of Arab architecture dating back to the year 715.

Take a day's shopping and sight seeing in the cities of Alicante and Valencia. Both abound with museums, interesting architecture, designer clothes shops and exceptionally good value leather goods.

In the summer months the long tourist stretch of Las Marinas, the coastal strip heading north out of Denia, bursts into life with live music, clubs and various shows until the small hours. There is also a great shopping mall there.

If it's international cabaret you're after, local travel agents organise regular trips down to Benidorm for the spectacular Benidorm Palace show, accompanied by dinner. You get a very slick show, a good dinner and your transport all for less than you'd pay for an average restaurant meal in the UK!
